Porirua City Council

Reuse champions, leading by example.

Porirua City Council has been at the forefront of introducing reuse to local events this year, supporting vendors and communities to move away from single-use.

Waitangi Day in Porirua is one of Aotearoa’s biggest celebrations for our national day, bringing around 35,000 attendees to Te Rauparaha Park. FillGood partnered with Nonstop Solutions, who have worked alongside Porirua City Council for the past four years on their journey toward zero waste, to deliver reuse on the ground. Together, we worked with vendors to swap out disposables for reusables.

Across the day, over 5,672 reusable items were served through 18 participating vendors - with seven more vendors choosing to jump on board on event day after seeing how smoothly reuse worked. Sometimes all it took was a small step, like giving one vendor a chalk pen to write orders on trays. With high vendor engagement, strong on-the-ground delivery, and community buy-in, the results spoke for themselves.

The Council’s commitment carried through to Love Local, the annual expo at Te Rauparaha Arena showcasing Porirua’s local businesses, creativity, and community services. Hundreds of reusable items were circulated, proving reuse fits seamlessly in both large-scale festivals and intimate local events.

From flagship celebrations to local expos, Porirua City Council - with support from Nonstop Solutions and FillGood - has shown what it means to back reuse in their community.

At first I was apprehensive about how this will work... but wow ... the delivery of products to my trailer and the continued support through out the day has made me a convert....my customers on mass agreed with the re use concept and were fully engaged. Great idea, great reuse items and great team to work with.
